Preparing Your Dog for Its First Boarding Stay: A Checklist

Dogs are social and adaptable, but a new place is still a big change. Whether you have chosen a cage-free hotel with a yard or a cosy private room, a bit of planning makes the first stay smooth for everyone.

Before you book

Make sure vaccinations are current, and if your dog is not used to other dogs, ask whether the hotel separates dogs by size and temperament. For very energetic dogs, a place with a yard, pool or daily walks will burn energy and reduce stress. Book a short trial stay if you can — a single night tells you a lot.

What to pack

Enough of their usual food for the whole stay, pre-portioned if possible
Vaccination book and any medication with clear dosing notes
A familiar blanket or toy, and their own leash and collar
Your contact number and your vet’s, plus a backup contact
Notes on feeding times, habits and anything that scares them
Cage-free hotels let sociable dogs play and settle faster.

Drop-off day

Keep goodbyes short and upbeat — dogs read your mood, so a calm, cheerful drop-off tells them everything is fine. Give the staff the notes you prepared, confirm how they will send updates, and trust the process. Most dogs are playing within the hour.
